Founded JR/Janus Merchant Brokers Ltd. in 1987. As President & CEO, Jack is actively engaged in all M&A assignments, often as team leader. His extensive background in business strategy, plus real world operating experience are important contributors to the excellent results the firm achieves for its clients.
From 1970 to 1987 Jack was with Hickling-Johnston Limited, as President from 1978 to 1984 when the business was acquired by William M. Mercer, a subsidiary of Marsh & McLennan. Jack served as Managing Director of that worldwide company until 1987, when he left to found JR/Janus.
His early career was in marketing management in consumer goods and advertising (Beecham Products, Bristol Myers, Ogilvy & Mather).
Jack graduated in Honours Business Administration from the University of Western Ontario (Ivey) in 1962; a Certified Management Consultant - Life Member; past President of the Canadian Association of Management Consultants; a graduate of the Young Presidents' Organization; currently in World Presidents' Organization; past President and Director of M&A International Inc. Over the years he has held directorships in a number of Canadian public and private companies, including a stint as Chairman/CEO of a Canadian public company.
G.A. Ross Carter, CA, Vice President,
Joined JR/Janus Merchant Brokers Ltd. in the spring of 1990 and became a Vice-President in December of 1991. Previously, he worked with Rothmans Benson & Hedges Inc., a major multi-national corporation, as a senior financial manager.
From 1984 to 1988, Ross was with Touche Ross & Co., having been admitted to the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario in 1987. He was involved with consulting, audit and tax for a diverse client base including merchant banking, property development, hospitality and retailing, as well as participating in a number of acquisition and divestiture evaluations.
Prior to obtaining his C.A. designation, Ross graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a B.A., majoring in Economics and Accounting.
Kevin Tremblay, CA•CBV, Vice President,
Joined JR/Janus Merchant Brokers Ltd., in January of 2001. Kevin acts as a strategic consultant advising on mergers and acquisitions and leads the internal process of managing engagements including financial analysis, srategic research, CIM development and documentation. Kevin is also the partner responsible for valuation services.
Kevin graduated from Laurentian University in 1997 with an Honours Bachelor of Commerce degree. From 1997 to 2000, he was with Ernst & Young LLP working in their assurance practice. His client base included companies in various industries such as retail, manufacturing, technology, entertainment, and financial services.
He was admitted to membership of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario in 2000 and obtained his Chartered Business Valuators designation through the Canadian Institute of Chartered Business Valuators in 2007.
Michael Thompson, Vice President,
Joined JR/Janus in March of 2007, as Vice President, responsible for the London Ontario practice, including South Western Ontario. However, Mike is an integral member of the overall JR/Janus team in all geography.
Upon graduation from Wilfred Laurier University in 1981, Mike joined his family’s business, Richardson Foods, a leading Canadian food manufacturer. In the ensuing 11 years, Mike filled senior management positions in Operations and Finance, ultimately becoming President in 1992. As owner & President, Mike managed the 1994 successful divestiture of Richardson Foods to Burns Philp Foods, Inc., a leading Australian food company. Mike continued as President of Richardson Foods, added the responsibilities of Business Unit Director and served on the North American Foodservice and Industrial Division Management Board.
In 1997, Burns Philp withdraw from several markets and Mike spearheaded the divestiture effort resulting in the sale of the Richardson business to Coopertie Cosun, a prestigious $2 Billion Netherlands food company. Mike was appointed President of Unifine Canada and later President - North American Food service, serving on the Foodservice and Industrial Division Management Board that managed operations in Europe and North America.
In both his latter corporate roles, Mike handled multiple divestitures and acquisitions, involving mid-market businesses.
In 2002 Mike decided to make a career change, and after a brief stint with a private equity start-up, he founded an M&A practice serving the SW Ontario market.
Mike is currently Chairperson of the Advisory Board of Family Business Centre at the Richard Ivey School of Business, a member of the Corporate Sponsorship Committee of the London Health Sciences Foundation and has managed various philanthropic fundraising activities for community projects in London and area.
